As a family-owned, family-focused dental practice committed to our community's oral health and well-being since 1987, National Children’s Dental Health Month is one of our favorite times of the year at Gentry Dentistry of Suwanee! Please keep reading to learn what this annual observance represents and why engaging kids in their own dental care is so important from an early age.
Introduction to National Children's Dental Health Month
The American Dental Association (ADA) celebrates National Children’s Dental Health Month each February. Launched in 1941 and designed to promote a lifetime of healthy habits, this month-long observance is shared by thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers, and educators nationwide to promote the benefits of good oral health to children and their caregivers. What began as a one-day celebration in Cleveland, Ohio, was adopted by the ADA in 1949, grew to a week-long commemoration in 1955, and expanded to a month-long event in 1981. To raise awareness of the importance of good oral health, the event employs posters provided by the ADA, coloring and essay contests, health fairs, museum exhibits, classroom presentations, and more.
Practical Oral Health Tips for Kids
As part of its National Children’s Dental Health Month “Brush, Floss, Smile” messaging, the ADA promotes the following among young patients:
- Brush teeth two times a day with fluoride toothpaste to protect against cavities
- Floss between teeth at least once a day
- Eat healthy foods and limit sugary drinks
- Visit the dentist at least two times a year
Engaging Kids in Dental Care
In order to promote a healthy attitude toward oral care that will span their lifetime, it’s essential to engage kids in the protection of their own beautiful smiles from an early age. Empower them by allowing them to pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste – but make sure they are ADA-approved before purchasing. Find some fun songs to play while your children brush their teeth to encourage them to brush until the end – like “I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas.” You can also download activity sheets and coloring pages from the ADA’s National Children’s Dental Health Month page.

“It's hard to put into words just how much we appreciate and enjoyed our visits to Gentry Dentistry. This is due largely in part to Dr Darby, who listened to our concerns regarding our 6-year-old daughter's teeth and provided the best possible treatment. She was gentle, patient, and kind during the procedures. She will be our kids' forever dentist!” ~ Joshua W.
“We love the family feel of Gentry Dentistry. Our family has been going to Dr. Gentry for 18 years and love the addition of Dr. Darby. They were great with our kids when they were little.” ~ Polly S.
“My family and I have been coming to Dr. Gentry since we moved to Georgia over 20 years ago. It's a friendly, professional atmosphere with great staff. I highly recommend Dr. Gentry Dentistry!” ~ Christopher L.
